Gold metallic paint mottling often becomes easier to see as the basecoat flashes. The hood develops light and dark clouds while a nearby door looks even. Before changing the formula, compare the way those panels were sprayed. A different gun angle, distance or amount of material can change the appearance of the same paint.

First establish whether you are seeing metallic clouding, stripes, dry spray or incomplete hiding. They can overlap, but another wet coat is not the right answer to every one of them.

Mottling or Poor Coverage

Metallic paint changes appearance with viewing angle. Inspect the hood from several angles under consistent lighting, alongside a representative spray-out. A smooth surface can still have uneven effect-pigment appearance.

Why the Hood Can Look Worse Than Vertical Panels

Distance changes as you reach

On a broad hood, reaching across the panel can make the gun tilt or rise at the end of a pass. The fan then deposits material differently across its width. Keep the working distance and angle consistent through the pass, including the centre of the hood.

Plan where to stand and how to complete each section before spraying. If you cannot maintain the required position, change the working arrangement safely rather than compensating with a wetter pass.

Overlap and speed leave a pattern

A slower section receives more material. Irregular overlap can produce heavier bands beside lighter areas. These variations are easier to notice across a large uninterrupted surface.

Use the overlap and coat sequence for the coating, and keep travel speed repeatable. Check the pattern on a test surface first. A distorted fan can resemble a technique problem even when your movement is consistent.

Mixing and evaporation affect the result

Confirm that the paint was mixed thoroughly and reduced with the correct product. Compare panel temperature and application conditions as well as the gun settings. PPG's mottling guidance identifies application density, nozzle pattern, mixing, thinner and surface temperature among the checks.

Our metallic paint flash time guide covers the wider drying and reducer questions. A slower reducer is appropriate only when the paint system supports it for the conditions. It will not repair a blocked air cap or inconsistent overlap.

How to Fix Mottling in Metallic Base Coat

Before clearcoat

Pause and inspect the basecoat at the stage the coating maker specifies. Confirm hiding first. An orientation coat cannot compensate for an undercoat that is still visible.

Check the approved correction method and application window. It may call for further colour coverage, an effect coat or another preparation step. Test the proposed sequence on a representative panel before repeating it across the hood.

After clearcoat

Polishing the clear surface does not rearrange the metallic layer beneath it. Follow the paint system's repair procedure for preparing the finish and reapplying colour and clearcoat. Establish the required repair area and any blending work before sanding.

If lifting, softness or another coating failure accompanies the colour problem, investigate those layers as well. A colour correction assumes there is a stable foundation to repaint.

Was the Drop Coat Too Dry

A dusty or grainy control coat is a reason to review the process. Excessive distance, unsuitable evaporation or an inappropriate setup can leave material that does not form the intended film. Flooding the hood to compensate can create a different metallic pattern.

The term drop coat does not specify one universal technique. As a concrete example, the Cromax XP technical data sheet describes an effect coat for high-aluminium colours after coverage is achieved. It increases gun distance by about two inches while retaining full trigger, normal speed and overlap. That instruction is specific to that product and application. It does not establish a method for every gold formula or waterborne basecoat.

If your TDS gives a different control-coat method, use that method. Record the result on the spray-out so that the panel application can be repeated.

Spray Gun Settings to Check Before the Next Pass

Setting

What to verify

What to avoid assuming

Nozzle and air cap

The combination suits the exact basecoat

Equal nozzle diameters make different guns equivalent

Working pressure

The value is checked at the specified point with air flowing

A resting compressor reading is the gun's working pressure

Fan and fluid delivery

A balanced pattern without spitting or heavy edges

More fluid will always improve hiding

Distance and movement

Repeatable position through the whole pass

A generic drop-coat distance suits every system

For the air-supply check, see spray gun air pressure regulation. If the pattern weakens during a long pass, address sustained air delivery before attempting a colour correction.

The PRD-717 offers 1.3 and 1.4 mm nozzle options with a published 1.3–1.8 bar operating range. Check that the selected setup matches the coating instructions and verify the actual pattern. Those specifications are a starting point for that gun, not a setting that guarantees a uniform gold finish.

Before spraying colour or clear again, review each component's safety data sheet and the 2K clear coat safety guide for the later clearcoat stage. Keep the spray environment and protective equipment appropriate to the materials.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use a slower reducer for gold metallic paint

Only when it is approved for the product and conditions. Check the fan, coverage and pass technique first. A reducer change can alter drying as well as wetness and may make a heavy application harder to control.

Will clearcoat hide metallic mottling

Do not rely on it. Clearcoat changes gloss and the way the colour is viewed, but it does not reliably correct uneven basecoat application. Inspect and correct the colour before clearing.

Should every metallic basecoat receive a drop coat

No. Use the control or orientation coat only as specified for the exact paint system. Some procedures differ by colour family and repair type.

Why is the hood mottled when the doors look even

Compare reach, angle, overlap, fluid deposit and panel conditions. Repeat the intended process on a representative panel. The difference alone does not prove the paint formula is defective.
